Biography

With more than five decades of experience in criminal defense, James E. Boren is widely recognized as one of Louisiana’s most accomplished and respected trial lawyers. His practice has focused almost exclusively on criminal defense since the mid-1970s, handling complex cases in both state and federal courts across Louisiana and nationwide.

Mr. Boren has represented individuals and organizations in high-stakes matters ranging from homicide and white-collar investigations to appellate and post-conviction proceedings. His work includes defending judges, attorneys, public officials, and professionals in disciplinary actions, as well as guiding clients through sophisticated, multi-jurisdictional investigations.

Known for his meticulous preparation and strategic insight, Mr. Boren approaches each case with a focus on uncovering critical facts, developing compelling defenses, and assembling the right team of experts to achieve the best possible outcome. He has extensive experience at every stage of criminal proceedings—from initial investigation through trial, appeal, and post-conviction relief.

Throughout his career, Mr. Boren has taken on some of the most challenging cases, often involving severe charges or significant public attention. In addition to his trial work, Mr. Boren has long been a leader in the legal community. He has taught as an adjunct professor at LSU Law School for nearly 20 years, instructing courses in advanced litigation, capital punishment, and wrongful convictions, and has frequently lectured to attorneys nationwide on trial strategy, jury selection, and legal ethics.

Mr. Boren’s contributions to the profession have earned him numerous honors, including recognition by Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, and Martindale-Hubbell, as well as the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Justice Albert Tate, Jr. Award for lifetime achievement and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Champion of Justice Award.

Today, as Of Counsel to Longman Jakuback, Mr. Boren brings his decades of experience to the firm in a strategic and mentorship role. He works closely with the firm’s attorneys on complex cases, providing high-level guidance on case development, trial strategy, and client advocacy. His long-standing relationship with the firm’s founders—whom he first met as law students—reflects a shared commitment to protecting the rights of the accused and delivering exceptional defense representation.
